Product Info

Begin with convenient pickup from your Yellowknife accommodation, then travel west along the Frontier Trail, also known as Highway 3.

During the first part of the journey between Yellowknife and Behchokǫ̀, take in the changing northern landscape. See exposed Canadian Shield rock, boreal forest, lakes, and areas shaped by wildfires in previous years. Your guide will share information about the land, local communities, and life in the Northwest Territories as you travel.

Bison are not normally seen during this first section of the drive. The main wildlife-viewing area begins after passing Behchokǫ̀.

Cross the Frank Channel and stop at the North Arm Day Use Area beside Great Slave Lake. Take time to enjoy the scenery, stretch your legs, take photographs, and use the available outhouse facilities before continuing farther along Highway 3.

From the North Arm, enter the area where free-roaming wood bison are commonly seen. Continue toward the Whatì turnoff while your guide searches the roadside, forest edges, and open areas for bison. Spend approximately 90 minutes travelling through the bison-viewing area before turning around for the return journey.

This is an authentic wildlife-viewing experience, not a fenced attraction. The bison move freely through their natural habitat, and their location changes according to the season, weather, daylight, and other natural conditions. When bison or other wildlife are spotted, your guide will stop at a safe location whenever possible so you can observe and take photographs.

For your safety, remain inside the vehicle unless your guide confirms that it is safe to exit.

Light snacks and beverages are provided during the journey. At the end of the tour, relax on the drive back to your Yellowknife accommodation.
