Using a hand auger, drill a small hole through the ice and lower your line into the dark water below. This is traditional Lapland ice fishing, or "pilkkiminen", using a short rod and a small vertical jigging lure (pilkki), moved gently up and down to attract fish beneath the ice. Your guide shows you the jigging motion, helps you read the depth, and explains which spots tend to hold fish depending on the lake bottom and time of day. Typical catches on Palojärvi include perch, pikeand occasionally roach, though as always with fishing, nothing is guaranteed, and that's part of the charm.
