Start your day with a pleasant morning walk along a canal in De Rijp. Admire the beautiful traditional wooden houses and the monumental buildings from the Dutch Golden Age, including the impressive town hall.

Continue to Schermerhorn, the home of three of the oldest and most beautiful traditional Dutch windmills. Explore one of the mills, which is now a museum, and learn about the history of the windmills.

Cross the Afsluitdijk, a 32-kilometer-long dike that blocks off an entire sea to keep the country safe. Stop for a traditional lunch in the village of Woudsend, where a church building from the 18th century has been transformed into a restaurant.

Continue to Sloten, the smallest of the legendary 11 towns of Friesland. Take a pleasant town walk and see the old 17th-century merchant houses with beautiful characteristic gables.
