Informations sur le produit

Castlefield looks picturesque today… canalside bars, restored warehouses, heritage branding… but this landscape has been constantly fought over, erased and reinvented.

Starting from Lower Campfield Market, we begin at the site of the Roman fort at Castlefield, where Manchester first emerged as a frontier settlement on the edge of empire. From here, we trace how that earliest geography, river crossings, routes and boundaries, still quietly shapes the city.

We then move into the canal basin, once the engine room of the Industrial Revolution. What is now a leisure district of bars and walkways was originally a working landscape of coal, goods and labour. We look at how the canals fell into decline, and how they’ve since been selectively revived, not as infrastructure, but as atmosphere.

As the route continues, the arrival of the railways tells a more brutal story. Viaducts and lines cut through Castlefield, compressing canals, roads and buildings into a dense knot of infrastructure. We discuss the Ordsall Chord, a recent intervention that physically split a historic railway alignment in two, and what that decision says about how heritage is valued, compromised or overridden.

Nearby, we pause at the site of the UK’s first public lending library, opened in the 1850s - a radical civic experiment in education and access. Today, its location is marked not by grandeur, but by a nondescript late-20th-century housing estate, raising questions about what the city chooses to remember, and what it allows to disappear.

The story pivots again in the 20th century with Granada Studios, which turned Castlefield into a place of broadcasting rather than manufacturing. The famous studio tours opened television to the public, and sets for shows like Coronation Street gave the area a national cultural presence long before regeneration became policy.

We finish near Factory International, reflecting on how Castlefield has been repeatedly repackaged, from Roman fort, to industrial powerhouse, to transport hub, to cultural quarter. This is not a nostalgic walk, but a clear-eyed look at how Manchester is continually rebuilt, rebranded and reinterpreted, often on top of what came before.

Led by a Manchester-born architect and using historic maps and images on a portable screen, the tour reveals the layers you’re usually encouraged to walk past without questioning.
