Informations sur le produit

Join me for a walk through the historic East End of London, starting at Hackney Town Hall (where I got married) and ending at Spitalfields Market. This isn’t just a tick-box tourist attraction trip – we discuss the real issues that have faced the multicultural people of the boroughs of Hackney and Tower Hamlets. We look at housing, gentrification, squatters, campaigners, traffic, immigration, the blitz, the industrial revolution and all subjects in between!

We begin in London Fields, a favourite gathering spot for East Londoners. The park is surrounded by handsome Georgian houses that give it that classic London charm.
A short stroll brings us onto Broadway Market, one of London’s most beloved neighbourhood streets.

If we’re lucky enough to visit on market day stalls line the street with fresh produce, handmade goods, street food and traders who know how to charm a crowd. We’ll pause at the traditional Pie and Mash shop, a rare East End gem, a listed building working as an optician now. Photographers love it, foodies adore it, and people-watchers could stay here for hours.

Leaving the bustle of the market, we head down toward the Regent’s Canal where everything slows down. The water reflects the sky and the old gasworks form striking silhouettes in the background.

Then we dip into one of East London’s little treasures: a genuine City Farm, complete with goats, sheep, chickens, and community gardens. It’s charming, unexpected, and always a hit with visitors. You can smell the hay, hear the clucking, and suddenly forget you’re in London at all. Just opposite, the old children’s hospital adds a splash of character with its distinctive façade and period details.

Next, we wander down Columbia Road, a beautiful stretch of Victorian terraces. On a Sunday the whole street bursts with colour and fragrance. Buckets overflow with tulips, roses, houseplants, herbs, and succulents.

Independent boutiques sell ceramics, prints, shellfish, clothes, jewellery, and sweet treats. It’s cosy, picturesque, and full of creative energy, a perfect place to browse, take photos, and soak up the charm of one of London’s best-loved streets.

From Columbia Road, we take a short walk to the Boundary Estate, instantly recognisable for its warm red-brick mansion blocks that curve around the central bandstand at Arnold Circus. The whole area feels peaceful, almost village-like, despite being right in the heart of the city. This estate is the first social housing in Europe built on the old Jago slum.

Our last leg leads us onto Brick Lane, a street famous for its effortless blend of cultures, flavours, and creativity. Here, street art, markets, food, fashion, and music combine into an atmosphere that’s pure East End.

And of course, there’s the chance to grab a warm salt beef bagel from the legendary Jewish bakery near the top of the lane, a perfect, tasty finale to the tour.

The walk is suitable for dogs with space to run in the park.
