Informations sur le produit

Join former history professor, Sami, for a family-friendly Old Town walk built around great storytelling and genuine connection - sometimes joined by one of our Golden Retriever tour guides. Explore Edinburgh as a city shaped by stories and by the people who lived them.

With an 11:00am start, this walk is perfect if you’d rather skip the early-morning rush: enjoy a relaxed breakfast, arrive unhurried, and settle into a more intentional pace as the city comes to life. This tour isn’t a word-for-word script or a rushed checklist of sights; it’s an inclusive, conversation-led experience where Sami adapts to the group, welcomes questions, and brings Edinburgh’s past to life in a way that works for all ages.

Our theme is simple: Edinburgh isn’t just castles and kings - it’s workers, writers, rebels, and rule-breakers. As we walk, we follow the Royal Mile like a timeline, tracing how the city’s identity was made in closes, courtyards, and everyday streets. You’ll hear the big moments, but we focus on the human ones - social history that brings Edinburgh to life through real lives, including the women whose stories are too often skipped on more generic tours.

We begin in Makars’ Court, where Edinburgh’s literary voices open the first chapter: who gets remembered, who gets left out, and why words have always mattered here. From there we move toward the Edinburgh Castle Esplanade, where the skyline sets the stakes - power, conflict, and the public theatre of authority. But instead of staying in ‘headline history,’ we ask what those events meant for ordinary people living in the shadow of the fortress.

Descending Castlehill, the mood shifts from power to belief. Here, witches, wizards, and folklore aren’t treated as gimmicks - they become a window into fear, faith, and the pressures of daily life in the Old Town. We continue toward colourful Victoria Street and into the Grassmarket, where Edinburgh’s beauty meets its brutal edge. This is where the city’s social history hits hardest: the lives of locals who worked, resisted, survived, and sometimes paid the price - told with empathy, humour, and the kind of detail that makes you feel the street under your feet.

Next, we reach Greyfriars Bobby for a heartfelt moment that stays with many guests. From there we rejoin the Royal Mile to meet the thinkers and larger-than-life characters who shaped Edinburgh’s reputation - along with the surprising twists, contradictions, and scandals that make the city feel vividly human rather than museum-perfect.

We finish at St Giles’ Cathedral with stories of saints and sinners, power and punishment, and reputations made (and unmade) - a strong ending that ties the threads together, so you leave with a coherent story of Edinburgh, not just a list of stops.

This tour is a great fit for those who want a later start, a relaxed pace, and a people-first focus beyond the usual ‘same stops, same script’- and sometimes with a Golden Retriever tour guide.
