As early as 1380, the first rock passages for the maturation and storage of the barley juice were carved into the Burgberg. Would you have thought that the city council had already stipulated in 1303 – a good 200 years before the Bavarian Purity Law – that only barley malt may be used for brewing? Here in Nuremberg, it was dried so intensively that the beer took on a very special color: the legendary Nuremberg red beer was born. It lends its name to this guided tour and dominated the local market for centuries. But unfortunately, the variety later fell into oblivion.
