The Japan Air Self-Defense Force Hyakuri Air Base is the only base in the Tokyo metropolitan area that houses a fighter wing (a unit that operates fighter jets), playing a role in protecting Japan's airspace. The base is opened to the public for flight demonstrations, aircraft ground displays, and equipment exhibitions. The Hyakuri Air Base Air Show, where the F-2 fighter jet is the main attraction, is packed with highlights including flight demonstrations, tactical maneuvers, and simulated ground attacks.

*There is no Blue Impulse flight demonstration scheduled for 2026.

  • Hyakuri Air Base

Hyakuri Air Base is located north of Lake Kasumigaura, about 5km from Ibaraki Airport. The base covers an area of approximately 1.38 million tsubo and operates and maintains Hyakuri Airfield, which has two 2,700m runways. The Ibaraki Airport terminal is adjacent to the west side of the base and is used jointly. Approximately 1,500 personnel (pilots, maintenance, air traffic control, meteorology, firefighting, transport, etc.) are stationed at the base, maintaining a 24/7, 365-day alert posture while training day and night. They carry out various activities with the missions of 1) protecting Japan's airspace and 2) protecting the lives of the people. The air show is a once-a-year event where this Hyakuri Air Base is opened to the public!
