"Kobo Seikan" is a workshop, shop, and cafe all in one, offering tours of the Yamanaka lacquerware manufacturing process, woodturning experiences, and opportunities to shop and enjoy cafes and sweets served in lacquerware. This course includes a workshop tour (with explanations) and a painting experience. Here, lacquerware artisans work every day. This experience allows you to observe their work up close and learn about lacquerware production. Our staff will explain everything clearly. Next, you will paint illustrations on Yamanaka lacquerware plates using colorful lacquer. You will have the opportunity to experience being a maki-e (lacquer painting) artisan. Handling lacquer can be challenging, but it's fun because you get to choose the colors and patterns yourself! Our staff will provide careful support, so you can complete your piece yourself. We are sure you will be satisfied. Afterwards, you can relax and enjoy your lacquerware experience by enjoying drinks served in lacquerware at the cafe or admiring the wall art. Please feel free to ask our staff or artisans any questions you may have. Please participate only after understanding the handling and precautions for lacquerware. Lacquerware workshops typically operate on a division of labor system, making it impossible to see various processes in one location. However, at "Kobo Seikan," you can currently observe several processes from woodturning and lacquering to maki-e (gold lacquer) application all in one place. It's a very rare workshop where you can see craftsmen at work up close. The staff will also explain each process, making it easy to learn about lacquerware.
You can experience painting with colored lacquer.
This is a hands-on experience using various colored lacquers. In this plan, instead of creating a piece of pottery that requires advanced techniques, you will design and paint your own original plate. You will learn how to handle lacquer, as well as its properties, and your knowledge of lacquerware will expand, making it a highly satisfying experience. Liquid lacquer can cause allergic reactions and is therefore very dangerous. However, we have sufficient knowledge and experience to ensure that you can have a safe experience, so please rest assured. *You can take your finished work home on the same day. *In rare cases, symptoms such as itching may occur. In such cases, we will refrain from the experience.
