Product Info

Magome and Tsumago are post towns on the Nakasendo, a highway connecting Kyoto and Edo, and they still retain much of the beautiful townscape of the Edo period.

The approximately 9-kilometer road connecting these two post towns is remarkably well-preserved, allowing hikers to enjoy the simple natural scenery, including cobblestone paths reminiscent of the time when samurai walked them, mountain pass teahouses, and beautiful rural landscapes.

A convenient bus service connecting Takayama and popular tourist destinations will resume operation for a limited time from April 1st to November 30th, 2026, taking 2 hours and 45 minutes. We encourage you to enjoy a day trip from Takayama or Gero Onsen to explore the post towns of Magome and Tsumago.

  • Magome-juku

Magome-juku is a post town on the Nakasendo, a highway connecting Edo (Tokyo) and Kyoto. The settlement, built along a cobblestone slope, retains much of its Edo-period character. Located at a relatively high elevation of approximately 600 meters, it is a scenic tourist spot offering panoramic views of the town of Nakatsugawa and Mount Ena, one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains.

  • Tsumago-juku

Tsumago-juku was the first town in Japan to be designated a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. It is a post town where people still live today, with rows of historic buildings featuring projecting beams and decorative gables, preserving the atmosphere of the Edo period.

  • Nakasendo SAMURAI Road Walk

This hiking course, connecting Magome-juku and Tsumago-juku, is approximately 9km long and takes about 3 hours to complete. You can enjoy the simple beauty of nature, including the cobblestone path that once traversed by samurai, the teahouses at the mountain pass, and the lovely rural scenery.

  • Ichiishi Tochigi Post Station Teahouse

Located between Magome-juku and Tsumago-juku, this teahouse has long been used as a resting place to soothe the fatigue of travelers. Why not take a moment to relax in this space where time seems to slow down as it did in the old days?
