- Facility Introduction -
Kairakuen is one of the three most famous gardens in Japan, along with Kenrokuen in Kanazawa and Korakuen in Okayama.
The garden was opened in 1842 by Tokugawa Nariaki, the ninth lord of the Mito domain, with the desire to create a place that he and his subjects could enjoy together.
There are about 3,000 plum trees of about 100 varieties planted, and the park is bustling with visitors who come to see the plum blossoms. The park is decorated with seasonal flowers such as cherry blossoms, azaleas, bush clover, and bi-seasonal cherry blossoms in early winter.

Mid-February to September 30: 6:00 to 19:00
October 1st to mid-February: 7:00-18:00
*Open until 5pm on weekends and holidays from February 15th to March 9th
- No fixed closing days
- Please refrain from bringing pets (dogs, etc.) into the park.
★ Admission is free for those who meet the following criteria ★
- Residents of Ibaraki Prefecture *Proof of residence must be presented. Except during the plum blossom viewing period (mid-February to late March)
- Elementary, junior high, and high school students who enrolled on a Saturday other than spring, summer, or winter holidays Spring break: March 25th to April 5th Summer break: July 21st to August 31st Winter break: December 25th to January 7th of the following year
- Those receiving welfare assistance
- Those with a disability certificate (including one caregiver)
- Those who have a designated intractable disease medical care benefit certificate (including one caregiver)
- Free for everyone on Ibaraki Prefecture Day (11/13)
- Free admission for all visitors who enter from opening time until 9:00 a.m. *Excluding the plum blossom viewing period (mid-February to late March)

1. Take a bus from Mito Station North Exit Bus Stop 4 (Ibaraki Kotsu) (about 20 minutes) - Get off at "Kobuntei Omotemon Iriguchi" and walk about 3 minutes.
2. Take the bus from Mito Station North Exit Bus Stop 6 (Kanto Railway) (about 20 minutes) - get off at "Kairakuen Senbako" and walk 5-10 minutes.
