Arrive at Messene in less than 1 hour, stopping first at the village of Mavrommati to recount a legend of the Ancient Greeks related to Zeus. Stop for an hour in the traditional coffee shop of Ithomi Taverna and learn all about the foundation of the city and the changing history of its rulers before you enter the site.

Enter through the Arcadian Gate and admire the splendor of the city-state. Try to imagine how it felt to be a Messenian warrior going into battle. Be amazed by the imposing fortifications of the city wall, and see the only surviving entrance gate, built in 369 BC. Follow the same paths walked by Epaminondas, the famous general from Ancient Thiva who founded Ancient Messene on the ruins of Ancient Ithomi after it was sacked by the Spartans.

Once you have finished exploring at leisure, return to the gate where your tour leader will be waiting to answer all your questions.
