Explore the Basque Country on a friendly hike combining nature, encounters with wildlife (lots of Pottok), and local cuisine. Accompanied by Manon from Gasna Tours, you will take magnificent trails offering superb panoramas of the Basque mountains before reaching a local farm in the heart of the countryside.
This special stop will be an opportunity to meet Bixente and Ramuntxo, to learn more about their profession, the animals, and the know-how that shape the region's iconic products. In an authentic and welcoming setting, you will then enjoy a food tasting of the farm's products, showcasing two PDO products from the Basque Country: Ossau Iraty & Porc Kintoa from Gaec Mendiari in Urrugne.
Much more than a simple hike, this experience is a true immersion in Basque culture, where meeting people, sharing, and discovering the local area are central. Between unspoiled landscapes, exceptional products, and a friendly atmosphere, experience an authentic and timeless moment, getting as close as possible to those who bring the Basque Country to life on a daily basis.
Route
Meet in Urrugne, at the Mont du Calvaire parking lot: 375 Chem. du Calvaire, 64122 Urrugne
We will leave this parking lot on foot to reach 2 small peaks. It takes about 2 hours of walking, with a gourmet break! On the way back, we may have the pleasure of meeting the farm's free-range pigs, then we will take the car for a short distance, just to avoid walking along a busy road, and we will visit the farm of our producer Bixente and his dad. Needless to say, we will taste farm products, and you can leave with plenty of souvenirs and farm products if you liked them!
Mandatory equipment
- Sturdy shoes for walking (at least sports shoes)
- A rain jacket/windbreaker, as we won't necessarily be sheltered from the wind at higher altitudes!
- Minimum 1.5 liters of water (per person)
Hike level: easy and accessible for ages 8 and up
The hike is easy and suitable for anyone who is able to walk on mountain trails. The route follows marked paths, with no technical difficulties or particular obstacles. It is nevertheless a real hike, including a few climbs and a positive elevation gain of about 250 meters; the effort remains moderate but may be experienced differently depending on the physical condition of each individual.
The route is punctuated by numerous breaks, allowing you to fully enjoy the magnificent landscapes of the Basque country, to talk with others, and to discover the environment around you. The goal is not athletic performance, but the pleasure of enjoying a friendly and authentic experience in the heart of nature. Everyone is free to move at their own pace to fully enjoy this experience.
