Stretching out almost a kilometre at low tide along Vancouver's coastline, we'll explore the expansive tidal flats, wade through tide pools, walk out to a hidden sandbar, and watch for herons, eagles, seals, and if we're lucky, a whale.
As a local who knows these tides well, I'll guide you over the flats so you can slow down and focus on what's around you, feel the tide moving beneath you, hear waves rolling in and spot the eagles flying overhead, as part of a restorative way to experience Vancouver.
Each low tide walk is unique and is shaped by the day's tide, the season, and the wildlife we encounter.
It's an invitation to slow down and notice what's around you, to feel the ripples in the tidal flat sand, to notice the tide shift around you, and to hear the waves rolling over the shore.
We'll move at a gentle pace so you can slow down, focus on your sensory awareness, and have plenty of time to take in the stunning panoramic views.
I'll guide you through shallow tide pools and out to where the low tide reveals an exceptionally soft sandbar, and I'll help you spot local marine life, including herons, cormorants, and harbour seals, and on occasion, grey whales feeding close by.
We meet at the Locarno Beach Picnic Site (in Vancouver BC), tucked under a circle of towering trees just before the concession stand (coming from English Bay), and just steps from the bus stop at Northwest Marine Drive and Belmont Avenue.
Few urban beaches in the world offer an experience like this, with sweeping views of English Bay and the downtown skyline, Burrard Inlet stretching toward the North Shore mountains, and on clear days, the Gulf Islands across the Strait of Georgia.
