Product Info

This isn't a tour that starts at a museum door — it's a walk that starts at the actual site of the event, and ends at how a country chose to remember it. We begin at Plaza de la Constitución, right in front of La Moneda, with the context that led to the coup of September 11, 1973. From there we walk the palace's own perimeter to Morandé 80 — the historic door through which President Allende's body was removed after the coup, later sealed shut by the dictatorship to erase the memory, and reopened by President Lagos in 2003. We close the circuit at Plaza de la Ciudadanía, home to the Centro Cultural La Moneda — built in 2006 as the architectural opposite of that sealed door: a government building deliberately opened back up to its citizens. From there, we travel together by metro to the Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos, Chile's national museum documenting this period, where we walk through the key exhibits and talk about how Chile investigated and documented what happened after the return to democracy in 1990. This tour stands on its own, but pairs naturally with our Economic History tour — together they build a fuller picture of modern Chile.
