In the 1860s, not only was the main building of ETH Zurich built – just a stone's throw away, the architect Gottfried Semper also had the Federal Observatory built, making it one of the oldest research buildings at ETH Zurich. Generations of researchers have gazed into the vastness of space from here. During a visit, you will see the historic dome, where sunspots were observed as early as the 19th century, and the Solar Tower, which was used between 1951 and 1980 to study the outer solar atmosphere – work that received worldwide attention. Explore a piece of scientific history, discover an architectural jewel in central Zurich, and reach for the stars.
