Kandersteg: Oeschinensee Panorama Hike with a Swiss Athlete｜Switzerland

Starting in the mountain village of Kandersteg, this rewarding alpine hike leads us through quiet forest trails and steadily upward into one of the most beautiful mountain landscapes in the Bernese Oberland.

The trail climbs through a mix of switchbacks and gravel mountain roads as the valley slowly opens below us. Our first major highlight is Oeschinensee — one of the most famous alpine lakes in Switzerland, surrounded by steep mountain walls and dramatic alpine scenery. In summer, cows often graze near the lake, adding to the classic Swiss mountain atmosphere.

From the lake, we continue higher into the surrounding alpine terrain. Depending on the season and mountain conditions, there are several beautiful options here — from the well-known panorama trail to higher routes with even broader views. This makes the experience especially flexible and allows us to shape the day according to conditions, pace, and how adventurous we want it to be.

Every season brings a completely different character to Kandersteg and Oeschinensee. Summer offers green alpine meadows, grazing cows, long mountain days, and, when available, the chance to rent a small rowing boat and experience the lake from the water. Autumn brings quieter trails and changing colors, while winter transforms the entire landscape into a snow-covered alpine world. In spring, the mountains are often still covered in snow while the lower valley gradually turns green again.

No two days here are quite the same — the route and experience naturally change with the season, weather, and mountain conditions.

Higher up, the landscape opens into wide mountain meadows and panoramic gravel paths with impressive views across the valley, rugged peaks, and the UNESCO-protected alpine scenery all around us. With some luck, we may even spot ibex on the rocky slopes above.

After exploring the upper terrain, we return toward the mountain restaurant by the lake — a perfect place to pause, enjoy the scenery, and take in the unique atmosphere of this extraordinary alpine setting.

From there, we descend back toward Kandersteg, either on foot or by gondola if preferred.
