Tour description

Starting from the vibrant 19th-century Paris of the Rive Droite, this walking itinerary offers a true journey through time: from the public spaces of the 19th century — theaters, covered passageways, and bourgeois salons — to the Rive Gauche of the 17th century, marked by aristocracy and spirituality. Guided by an art historian, you will read the city like a text, in which architecture, functions and social practices overlap and interact.

The route starts from the Opéra and runs along Rue Sainte-Anne, in the contemporary Japanese neighborhood, an example of living cultural stratification. Skirting the site of the Bibliothèque nationale de France, you reach Place Gaillon, home to Drouant, the historic meeting place of the Académie Goncourt and a symbol of Parisian literary sociability.

Continuing along Rue Vivienne and through the covered passageways — Passage des Panoramas, Passage Jouffroy and Galerie Vivienne — you will encounter 19th-century commercial microspaces: shops, ateliers and cafés that function as true urban archives of everyday life and the first forms of modern consumption.

The stop at Notre-Dame des Victoires introduces the dimension of popular devotion: hundreds of ex votos, some dating back to the 17th century, testify to a continuous religious practice despite the urban transformations. The cozy square restores the most intimate scale of the historic city.

Entering the Jardin du Palais-Royal and walking through its galleries, you can observe the metamorphosis of the space: from a 17th-century residence of power to a public salon and a place of exchange. The Louvre Museum then marks the transition from a royal palace to a museum institution, before crossing the Pont des Arts, a symbolic threshold to the Rive Gauche.

On this bank, the visit continues to Saint-Germain-des-Prés, with its church of early medieval origins and subsequent layers. The surrounding neighborhood, full of historic bookstores and the antique dealers' area of the Carré Rive Gauche, still preserves the practices of collecting and the circulation of knowledge.

The tour concludes at the Musée d'Orsay, a former train station converted into a 19th-century museum: the ideal place to reconnect the urban, artistic, and social transformations encountered along the route.
