Product Info

This is a traditional Japanese indigo dyeing experience to enjoy on Nokonoshima Island, Fukuoka. While dyeing fabric on an island surrounded by nature, you can enjoy the unique color changes of indigo and the fun of manual work. The highlight of this experience is the moment the fabric taken out of the indigo liquid changes from a dark emerald green to indigo blue. The patterns change depending on how you fold and tie the fabric, so no two works are the same. Do not look for a correct answer, and feel free to create your own unique piece. We will provide 2 tenugui towels per person for dyeing. We will also provide rubber gloves and simple raincoats, so you can participate without bringing any fabric or tools. You can take the finished tenugui towels home with you on the same day. Even beginners can rest assured as the instructor will guide you through the steps in an easy-to-understand manner. We welcome guests from overseas, those interested in Japanese culture, and families with children aged 10 and over. Let us enjoy the nature of Nokonoshima and the time of indigo dyeing together. ~Experience Flow~ 13:15 Reception and guidance for the experience We will guide you through the flow of the day and points to enjoy indigo dyeing. 13:35 Fold the fabric and create patterns Think of your own unique pattern by folding and tying the tenugui towel. 14:15 Dye with indigo Pull the fabric out of the indigo liquid and enjoy watching it change from green to blue up close. We can also help you take photos at the moment the color changes if you wish. 15:15 Untie the shibori and face your work An emotional moment to spread out the fabric and check what kind of pattern was created. 16:30 Take your work home We will hand over the 2 color-fixed tenugui towels in a zippered storage bag. Since the work is still damp, please take it out of the bag and dry it as soon as you get home.

Questions at the time of booking:

Question 1: Please inform us of the ages of all participants. The target age is from 10 to 80 years old.
Question 2: Please come in clothing that you do not mind getting dirty, as indigo dye may stain your clothes. Simple raincoats (top and bottom) and rubber gloves will be provided by us. Have you confirmed this?
Question 3: If you would like guidance in a language other than Japanese, please let us know your preferred language. We will provide English instructions, and the workshop will be conducted primarily in Japanese, using a smartphone translation app as needed.
Question 4: It is about a 10-minute walk from the Noko Ferry Terminal to the venue. There is no shuttle service. If you are concerned about walking, please let us know.

Regarding cancellation of the event:

The event will be held in normal rain. However, it will be cancelled if the ferry to Nokonoshima is cancelled due to bad weather, if there is a risk that the return ferry will be cancelled, or if it is difficult to hold the event safely due to heavy rain, strong winds, lightning, etc. It may also be cancelled if the instructor is unwell or if there are fewer than the minimum of 2 participants. We will contact those who have booked as soon as possible if a cancellation is decided. No cancellation fee will be charged if the event is cancelled at the organizer's discretion.

Notes for participating in the course:

・If you are going to be late for the meeting time, please contact us as soon as you know. If you are late, you may not be able to participate in part of the experience. ・Elementary and junior high school students must be accompanied by a guardian. ・Cars cannot enter the venue.

Other special notes:

The basic fee includes 2 tenugui towels for dyeing. T-shirts, mini bags, etc., are also sold on-site. If you bring your own fabric, an additional fee will be charged depending on the weight. If you wish to do so, please let us know the type and size of the fabric in advance. Although we will fix the color during the experience, the color will fade for the first few washes. Please wash separately from other clothing. Since the works will not be completely dry, we will hand them over in the zippered storage bags we provide. Please take them out of the bags and dry them as soon as you get home.

How to Get There

・For those coming by car: Please set your car navigation to 'Fukuoka City Ferry Meinohama Passenger Waiting Area' (3-1-1 Atagohama, Nishi-ku, Fukuoka City). Park your car in the paid parking lot next to the ferry terminal (510 yen per time) and board the ferry to Nokonoshima. ・For those coming by train: Get off at 'Meinohama Station' on the Subway Airport Line. From the south exit, take the Nishitetsu Bus No. 98 and get off at the final stop, 'Noko Ferry Terminal'. Board the ferry to Nokonoshima from the Meinohama Ferry Terminal in front of you. The ferry takes about 10 minutes. It is about a 10-minute walk from the Nokonoshima Ferry Terminal to the venue, 'STYDE NOKO' (192-8 Noko, Nishi-ku, Fukuoka City). ・For those coming by other means: We recommend the 8:15 ferry from Meinohama to arrive in time for the start. The experience is scheduled to end at 12:15. The 13:00 ferry from Noko is a good guideline for your return. Please allow enough time for transfers and purchasing boarding tickets.
