3-Day Uganda: Mabamba, Zika & Nkima Forest Herping Safari｜Uganda

Uganda is a world-class herping destination, but to maximize your success, timing and habitat selection are everything. This itinerary is meticulously designed to take advantage of the best herping windows: early mornings in the open wetlands when reptiles bask, and late afternoons and nights in the dense forests when amphibians emerge and nocturnal snakes become active.

By focusing on Mabamba Wetlands exclusively in the morning and dedicating the rest of your time to the adjacent Zika and Nkima Forests, you will cover a diverse range of microhabitats—from papyrus swamps to dense jungle—without wasting precious daylight hours traveling.

Why this timing works:
-Mabamba (Morning Only): The wetlands heat up quickly. Early morning (6:30 AM – 11:00 AM) is the prime time to see pythons and monitor lizards basking on papyrus before the sun gets too high and they retreat into the water.

-Zika & Nkima (Afternoon & Night): Forests retain moisture and stay cooler. Diurnal species like chameleons are active in the dappled light, and the real magic happens after dark when the forest floor comes alive with amphibians and ambush predators like the Bush Viper.

Itinerary:
Day 1: Mabamba Wetlands | Zika Forest
On this day you will go herping in Mabamba swamp in the morning and transfer to zika forest where you will have an afternoon and night herping.

Day 2: Transfer to Nkima Forest | Full Day Herping.
After breakfast at your hotel, you will transfer to Nkima Forest where we shall have a full day and night herping.

-Bush Vipers

-Black-lipped Herald

Day 3: Nkima Forest Morning Herping | Transfer back to Entebbe
After breakfast at Nkima Forest Lodge, we will proceed for our last herping experience in the forest where we might get a chance to see some more species we might have missed and later checkout to embark on our transfer back to Entebbe where you will either be dropped off at your hotel or at the airport for your flight to your next destination. This will mark the end of our experience.
