Product Info

Heritage Spice House sits on our family's ancestral land in Riambel, in the south of Mauritius. The family has ground spices by hand for generations, and this visit lets you see, grind and taste that tradition for yourself.

Your visit starts with a welcome herbal tea. A member of the family then walks you through the living spice garden, the old traditional kitchen and the vegetable alley, explaining how each plant has been used in Mauritian homes for generations.

In the heritage museum you'll see objects that belonged to our grandparents, including our grandfather's harmonium, which he played while singing at gamat during weddings, and our grandmother's sewing machine and charcoal iron.

Then it's your turn. At the spice kitchen you'll hand-grind your own masala on a volcanic ross cari stone, the way it has always been done in Mauritius. Afterwards, sit down at the family table for traditional tastings, and leave with a 50g pouch of the masala you made.

Our boutique sells the family's hand-ground spices if you'd like to take more home.
