From Gondar: Simien Mountains 2-Day Tour with Paragliding｜Ethiopia

Day 1: Into the Gelada Highlands

Depart Gondar in the morning and travel toward Simien Mountains National Park. As the road climbs, watch the landscape transform from farmland into spectacular highland scenery. Stop at scenic viewpoints along the way to photograph deep valleys, giant escarpments, highland plateaus, dramatic cliffs, terraced farmland, and distant mountain peaks.

The centerpiece of the experience is a guided walk through Gelada habitat. Look for groups of Gelada monkeys, often encountered grazing and moving across the highland grasslands. Instead of simply stopping to photograph them, your guide explains their behavior, including social groups, communication, feeding behavior, grooming, dominance displays, and their distinctive chest markings.

Continue your highland walk with a focus on birds. Look toward the cliffs and open sky for highland species and soaring raptors. Depending on season and conditions, possible sightings may include Lammergeier, thick-billed raven, augur buzzard, tawny eagle, wattled ibis, black-winged lapwing, and Abyssinian ground thrush.

Continue to your mountain accommodation or camp. As afternoon fades, enjoy one of the defining Simien experiences: clouds filling the valleys below you. When weather conditions create a cloud inversion, the mountains can appear to rise above a sea of cloud. Enjoy Ethiopian coffee or tea while watching the landscape change.

Enjoy dinner overlooking the mountains. After dark, relax around the accommodation or an approved fire area where permitted. The evening can include Ethiopian storytelling, local music, stargazing, hot coffee, & mountain photography.

Day 2: Sunrise Above the Clouds

Wake before sunrise & walk to a nearby permitted viewpoint while the mountains are still quiet. Watch the first light hit the escarpments. If a cloud layer has formed in the valleys below, the landscape can create the spectacular impression of mountains floating above the clouds.

After the morning mountain experience, travel to the designated launch area used by a licensed tandem paragliding operator, if the activity is operating. After a professional safety briefing, prepare for a tandem flight with a qualified pilot. Take off from the mountain & glide above the dramatic highland landscape. Depending on weather & flight conditions, experience views of clouds below, valleys stretching into the distance, & birds soaring in the surrounding airspace.

If the tandem paragliding flight is cancelled, unavailable, or replaced by the guided hike because weather, wind, visibility, provider availability, or safety conditions prevent the flight from taking place, the traveller is guaranteed the option to receive a full refund for the affected booking. The guided hike is offered only as an alternative experience & does not replace, remove, or limit the traveller’s guaranteed full-refund option. The traveller may choose whether to participate in the alternative hike or receive the guaranteed refund.
