It is one of the popular Buddhist monasteries. It is also known as Shey Gompa.
The monastery used to be the summer retreat of the royal family of Ladakh. The main attraction is the Shey Palace, a large structure built atop a hill, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The palace houses a giant golden statue of Lord Buddha, which is one of the largest such statues in Ladakh.
