This workshop, lasting approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, allows you to experience the traditional Japanese technique of "kintsugi." Kintsugi is a unique Japanese art form that repairs broken or chipped pottery, beautifully finishing the damage with gold. Rather than hiding the "chips" in the pottery, it transforms them into something with new charm. In the workshop, you will experience repairing pottery using specialized tools and gold powder. Our English-speaking staff will guide you carefully and clearly, even if it's your first time, so even beginners can participate with confidence. We also use materials that can be taken home on the same day, making it easy for travelers to enjoy. The finished work dries on the spot, so you can safely take it home with you. Why did kintsugi originate in Japan? Japan has a long-standing culture of "mottainai" (avoiding waste). In earthquake-prone Japan, it was not uncommon for precious pottery to break. However, instead of throwing away something just because it was broken, the idea of "repairing and continuing to use it for a long time" was valued. This is where kintsugi was born. By joining pieces of pottery together with lacquer and decorating the cracks with gold, even the damage is transformed into beauty.
