Product Info

  • Approximately 70% of domestically produced incense is made on Awaji Island. The Ei district, in particular, is a hub for manufacturers, and you can smell the pleasant aroma of incense as you walk through the town. It has even been selected as one of the '100 Fragrant Landscapes' by the Ministry of the Environment. Visit an incense manufacturer established in 1905 that preserves traditional handmade methods, learn about the history of Awaji incense, fragrance knowledge, and the manufacturing process from a 'Koshi' (incense master), and enjoy the experience of creating your own original incense. After touring an incense manufacturer on Awaji Island, which accounts for about 70% of domestic production, and learning the basics of incense from a 'Koshi' (incense master)—including the history of Awaji incense, fragrance knowledge, and traditional manufacturing processes—it is time to start making your own! Choose your incense color, place the ingredients and water in a mortar, and knead them together. Blend your preferred fragrances, knead again, and use molds to shape your incense. Take it home, let it dry thoroughly for about a week, and your incense is ready! You can enjoy the scent you created yourself at home. [Experience Schedule] 11:00 Meet up Tour the traditional incense manufacturing process at the Awaji Baikundo Ei Factory (30 minutes) 11:30 Learn the history of incense and fragrance knowledge from a Koshi (producer) and experience making incense (80 minutes) 12:50 Scheduled end time
  • [Awaji Island, the birthplace of incense making: Ei]
  • Ei, also known as Ei-ura, was a prosperous port that thrived from the early Edo period due to its shipping industry (maritime transport and commerce), making it the most prosperous port on Awaji Island. However, in winter, the port was often closed due to seasonal winds, leaving many without work. Men would leave home for about half a year to find work elsewhere. Incense making began as a winter side job for women, as it was well-suited to the climate of Ei-ura and the location was advantageous for transporting raw materials and finished products.
  • [Coincidence? A history of fragrance]
  • According to the Nihon Shoki, in the year 595 during the reign of Empress Suiko (the aunt of Prince Shotoku), a piece of wood washed ashore on the coast of Awaji Island. When residents casually burned it, a fragrant scent drifted through the air. They hurriedly pulled it from the fire and presented it to the Imperial Court. It is said that the Kannon statue at Horyu-ji Temple was carved from this fragrant wood. The wood is still cherished today and enshrined as a sacred object at Koreki Shrine.
