Suggested meeting point: Tasmanian Travel & Information Centre (20 Davey Street, Hobart)
It takes an hour to drive from Hobart to the ferry terminal, and a 30-minute boat ride will take you to Maria Island ā a charming island national park.
This is a trip designed for active travelers who love walking and enjoying this unique island. No cars are allowed on Maria Island. The main highlights are the painted cliffs, fossil cliffs, and of course, wildlife, history, and stunning scenery.
We enjoyed a series of easy, moderate walks to explore the island's history and main highlights. Starting on foot, we had two main walking trails for the day, totaling nearly 10 kilometers. From Darlington, we walked back along the Fossil Cliffs trail. Then we returned along the Painted Cliffs trail.
The path to the Painted Cliffs is gentle and mostly flat, leading us to Hopground Beach, which ends at the Painted Cliffs. We had ample time to explore the cliffs, photograph the unique landscape, and discover the area's many rock pools and beautiful nature.
The Fossil Cliffs Trail leads us to steep cliffs that plunge directly into the sea. The views from the top are spectacular. Even non-geology enthusiasts will be captivated by the sheer abundance of shell fossils exposed on the cliff face. It offers fascinating insights into the past environment of Maria Island and expansive views of the Fressina Peninsula.
The island is a wildlife paradise and one of the best places in Australia to see wombats, Tasmanian devils, Baron's horned geese, kangaroos, and wallabies. Birdlife is also captivating, with 125 bird species, including all of Tasmania's endemic species, including the endangered Forty-spotted Parrot and Swift Parrot.
Even taking the ferry is part of the day's highlights, as the waters we cross are teeming with marine life, and we'll keep an eye out for dolphins, seals, and penguins along the way.
