Dongyanshan National Forest Recreation Area is about a 1-hour drive from Daxi, Taoyuan. It was once a logging site for the Forestry Bureau, leaving behind many forestry relics such as log skidders and nurseries. At the entrance of the Dongman Trail, there is a reforestation memorial stone that bears witness to Taiwan's forestry history. Dongyanshan's ecology is also very rich, with about 43 species of mountain birds and numerous mammals; even the white-faced flying squirrel, usually found only at mid-to-high altitudes, can be seen here. Most uniquely, many Formosan hares live here, so don't forget to watch your step while strolling through the forest!
The Manyueyuan Waterfall and Virgin Waterfall at the end of the hiking trail are two major scenic spots in the recreation area. Looking from the Manyue Bridge, you can see a large rock wall over ten meters high obscuring the upper part of the Manyueyuan Waterfall, with the water rushing down in a magnificent display. The Virgin Waterfall is more gentle and graceful; on sunny days, light refracts through the water, often creating rainbow-like brilliance. The fossil area located along the Dongyanshan Forest Road features fossils and landscapes with millions of years of history, which are extremely precious.
