Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat is world-renowned as the largest religious monument globally, captivating visitors with its intricate Khmer architecture and its profound symbolic representation of the Hindu and Buddhist cosmos. Its immense scale, symmetrical design, and detailed bas-relief carvings depicting Hindu epics and historical events are iconic. The temple's unique westward orientation has led to theories that it was originally built as a funerary temple. Today, it stands as a potent symbol of national pride for Cambodia and is a crucial UNESCO World Heritage site.

Angkor Wat was commissioned by the Khmer king Suryavarman II in the early 12th century. He built it in Yaśodharapura, which is present-day Angkor, serving as his state temple and ultimately his mausoleum.

It is advisable to wear long pants or long skirts to cover your knees when visiting Angkor Wat. This dress code ensures respect for the sacred site and also offers protection from the sun and the rough textures of the temple walls.

While not part of the traditional ancient Seven Wonders of the World, Angkor Wat is widely recognized as the world's largest religious monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Due to its sheer magnificence and cultural importance, it is often referred to as the 'Eighth Wonder of the World.'

Angkor Wat's architecture is designed to symbolize Mount Meru, the mythical abode of gods in Hindu and Buddhist traditions, with its five central towers representing the mountain's peaks and a surrounding moat signifying the oceans. The temple walls are adorned with over 2,000 elaborate bas-relief carvings, including celestial nymphs known as apsaras and scenes from Hindu mythology. Its unusual westward orientation, coupled with its original dedication to the Hindu god Vishnu, suggests it might have been constructed as a royal mausoleum.
