Product Info

  • The Kujokan, located in the garden of the Tokyo National Museum, is a shoin-zukuri style reception hall originally built for the Kujyo family, one of the Five Regent Houses, within the Kyoto Imperial Palace. It was later moved to its current location in 1934 after serving as a villa for the Kujyo family in Akasaka. We are opening this usually closed building exclusively for this workshop. In this 65-minute experience, you will learn from the Choju-giga (Scrolls of Frolicking Animals and Humans), considered the origin of Japanese manga, and Katsushika Hokusai's Hokusai Manga, and draw your own manga using a brush pen. In the first half, you will draw a one-panel manga on a shikishi board featuring rabbits, frogs, and monkeys, while looking at a reproduction of the Choju-giga (Scroll A). In the second half, using the faces and expressions from Hokusai Manga as a reference, you will draw each other in pairs and finish a portrait on a shikishi board with Edo-period hairstyles. Finally, the instructor will draw a portrait of each participant in about 30 seconds as a gift. Your instructor is professional manga artist Kazuo Maekawa. He debuted in Young Magazine (Kodansha) in 1997 and has over 27 years of experience. He was in charge of the artwork for the manga versions of Ace Attorney and Ace Attorney Investigations (Kodansha), which have been translated and published worldwide. As a lead instructor at MANGA DOJO Tokyo (Ikebukuro), he has conducted manga workshops in Hawaii, Florida, the Netherlands, and more. The workshop will be conducted in Japanese with English interpretation provided for each session. No drawing experience is necessary, and all brush pens and paper are provided. You can take home the 2 shikishi boards you draw and the portrait drawn by the instructor. Participation from both Japan and overseas, as well as solo participation, is welcome. *Tokyo National Museum admission (General: JPY 1,000, University students: JPY 500, under 18 and 70 and above: free) is not included. Please purchase your ticket at the main gate.
