Product Info

  • Kujokan, located in the garden of the Tokyo National Museum, is a shoin-zukuri style room built in the Kujo residence within the Kyoto Imperial Palace for the head of the Kujo family, one of the Five Regent Houses. It was moved to its current location in the garden in 1934 after being at the Kujo residence in Akasaka. We are opening this building, which is usually closed to the public, especially for this workshop. This is a 60-minute experience where you will make nerikiri shaped like an autumn Japanese garden in this room. After a talk about wagashi designs and how to express the seasons, followed by a demonstration by the instructor, you will arrange kinton, which represents moss and autumn-colored mountains, on a design resembling stones, and finish your own autumn scenery by choosing your favorite molds and colors (1 piece per person). Once finished, you will whisk your own matcha after watching the instructor's demonstration and enjoy it on the spot with your nerikiri. The instructor is Saki Koike, a wagashi artist who presides over the wagashi school 'immer'. She expresses Japan's four seasons and natural scenery through wagashi, focusing on nerikiri. She completed the supplementary course at Tsuji Culinary Institute. She has worked on classes at temples, supervised wagashi for media projects, and designed and provided wagashi for VIPs at film-related events, with over 1,000 students taught, including English-language courses. On the day, Saki Koike herself will lead the session in Japanese and English, supported by an assistant. No experience is needed for making wagashi or whisking matcha, and all tools and materials are provided. We welcome participants from both Japan and overseas, as well as individual participants. * Tokyo National Museum admission (General: JPY 1,000, University students: JPY 500, under 18 and 70 and above: free) is not included in the fee. Please purchase your ticket at the main gate.
