Product Info

The Cullinan kimberlite pipe was first broken ground in 1903 under the name Premier Mine. Over a century later, it remains one of the most geologically significant diamond-bearing formations on Earth, responsible for more stones exceeding 400 carats than any other source in recorded history. This half-day tour puts you at the centre of it.

Your guide collects you directly from your hotel or private address in an air-conditioned vehicle, with bottled water and Wi-Fi on board for the 40-minute drive northeast of Pretoria. On arrival at the mine, the tour opens with a short screening that traces the kimberlite pipe's discovery in 1902, the transition from open-pit to underground block cave extraction in 1946, and Petra Diamonds' current stewardship of the operation.

The surface walkthrough covers the key structural points of the working mine: the main shaft headgear, the hoist room, a scale model of the underground tunnel network, and the Big Hole itself. Your guide explains the full extraction chain — from kimberlite blasting to ore sorting — and covers the four Cs of diamond grading in practical terms, using stones from the mine's own collection where available.

Cullinan's record includes the 3,106-carat rough diamond recovered in 1905, later cut into the Great Star of Africa and Lesser Star of Africa, both set in the British Crown Jewels. More recently, the mine has yielded a series of exceptionally rare Type IIb blue diamonds, including a 122.52-carat specimen valued at USD 27.6 million. Your guide contextualises these finds within the ongoing production story of the mine.

After the tour, browse the on-site diamond market where certified stones and jewellery are available for purchase at mine prices. Return transfer to your original pickup point concludes the experience.
