Discover the beauty of Champagne Beach and Matevulu Blue Hole in Santo, Luganville. Both are Santo classics, but they offer totally different vibes.
Start at Champagne Beach, a horseshoe-shaped beach on the northeast coast of Espiritu Santo, near Hog Harbour village. It’s famous for powdery white sand, crystal-clear turquoise water, and the “champagne” bubbles that rise from volcanic springs at low tide.
Enjoy baby blue, super clear, warm, and calm water, perfect for swimming and snorkeling right off the beach. Head left of the jetty for coral and tropical fish. You’ll see clownfish and coral the size of shrubs.
Take in the vibe with no resorts, just coconut palms and jungle behind you. The beach is managed by the Hog Harbour community. Local huts sell fresh lobster and crab, coconuts, and souvenirs. Kids often sing for donations to fund their kindergarten.
Next, head to Matevulu Blue Hole, a massive freshwater karst spring about 20 minutes northwest of Luganville. The water is so clear you can see the bottom. It’s the source of the Matevulu River.
Have fun with rope swings and a water slide off a huge banyan tree. Locals and tourists both go wild on them. Enjoy the cool, fresh, and bright blue water. The setting is surrounded by rainforest, making it feel like a jungle swimming hole.
The site is good for groups with shelters, tables, a dock, a changing room, and a pit toilet on site.
