Product Info

I grew up fishing these lakes with my father. Let me show you my home, not the tourist version.

We start at 2:00 PM in Musanze town. I will send you a Google Maps pin after booking. We take local transport together - 30 minutes through potato fields and small villages - to my favorite viewpoint. From this hill you see both Twin Lakes at once: Burera on one side, Ruhondo on the other, with Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo volcanoes behind. No sign, locals only - most visitors miss it.

We walk down to Lake Ruhondo. A fisherman from our cooperative waits with his traditional wooden canoe - same type families have used for generations. He paddles, you sit in the middle and enjoy. No motor, just birds and water.

We spend 90 minutes on the water. Clear water, small fish below, we pass small islands and I share why Burera & Ruhondo are called Twin Lakes but never meet. We often see kingfishers, herons, and African fish eagle. Bring binoculars if you have. You can try paddling - fishermen love to teach.

Around 5:30 PM is sunset golden hour. Volcanoes turn pink and orange and reflect on the lake. Best photo light - I know the spots and will take your photos. Guests say these become their favorite Rwanda pictures.

We paddle back slowly and return to Musanze by 6:30 PM for dinner.

Meeting: Musanze town center (pin after booking).

Local transport: We go together using local moto/taxi moto round trip, you pay driver directly. This keeps tour affordable, supports local drivers, and is part of the local experience. If you have own car/moto, follow us. If coming from Kigali, message me - I can help arrange private transport at extra cost.
