Day 1: Arrival in Paro and Drive to Thimphu
Arrive at Paro International Airport and meet your guide. Drive along the scenic Paro–Thimphu valley, following the river and green hills. Stop at Tachogang Lhakhang Iron Bridge, built by the saint-engineer Thangtong Gyalpo, a symbol of linking compassion and technology.
Reach Thimphu and check in to a hotel or traditional heritage lodge. In the evening, attend an orientation on “The Philosophy of Leadership in Bhutan,” discussing Buddhist ethical values guiding Bhutan’s monarchy and civil institutions. Enjoy dinner with local cuisine and soft folk music.
Day 2: The Dual System of Governance: Monks & Monarchs
Visit Tashichho Dzong, Bhutan’s grand fortress-monastery housing both the King’s secretariat and the central monastic body. Learn about Chösi Nyidrel, the dual system of governance founded in the 17th century.
Continue to Dechen Phodrang Monastic School, where young monks study Buddhist philosophy and logic. Observe a debate session if available, where monks engage in dynamic philosophical discourse on compassion and reasoning.
Visit the National Memorial Chorten, Thimphu’s spiritual landmark symbolizing universal peace and compassion. In the afternoon, have a discussion with a senior monk or GNH scholar on “Mindfulness in Leadership and Decision-Making.” Enjoy an optional short guided meditation session.
Day 3: Monastic Learning & Gross National Happiness (GNH)
In the morning, visit the Zorig Chusum School of Arts & Crafts, where Bhutanese youth preserve the 13 traditional arts (zorig chusum). Reflect on discipline and continuity as forms of mindful leadership.
Visit the Buddha Dordenma Statue and meditate before the colossal Buddha overlooking the valley. In the afternoon, attend a session at the GNH Centre or Centre for Bhutan Studies (subject to availability) for a lecture/discussion on “Integrating Compassion and Policy: How Bhutan Measures Happiness.”
In the evening, take a walk through Clock Tower Square and local markets to meet artisans and community leaders.
Day 4: Cheri Monastery Retreat & Monastic Dialogue
In the early morning, drive and take a short scenic hike to Cheri Monastery, Bhutan’s first monastic college, established in 1620 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. Attend morning prayer ceremonies (puja) with monks and participate in a dialogue with the abbot on “The Eightfold Path & Ethical Leadership.”
Return to Thimphu and visit the Simply Bhutan Museum, an interactive cultural space showcasing traditional homes, music, and leadership customs. In the evening, relax with an optional traditional hot stone bath therapy.
Day 5: Reflection & Departure via Paro
In the morning, join a reflection circle and closing discussion on “How Monastic Values Can Guide Modern Leadership.” Drive back to Paro, stopping at Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest and most sacred temples. Depart from Paro International Airport with blessings from the monks.
