_What You Can Expect_

Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park is one of the most remarkable places in New Zealand to experience the night sky. Located within the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, the region benefits from exceptionally low levels of light pollution, crisp alpine air and vast open skies. Join us on the only stargazing tour in the Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. 

Surrounded by New Zealand's highest mountains, Big Sky Stargazing offers a unique perspective on the cosmos. On a clear night, the Milky Way stretches overhead in extraordinary detail, while distant galaxies, star clusters and planets become visible through our powerful telescopes. Our resident astronomy guides will take you on a 90-minute tour of the night sky through high powered telescopes along with discussing incredible features visible to the naked eye. 

Unlike many urban stargazing experiences, the night sky in Aoraki / Mount Cook remains largely untouched by artificial light, creating ideal conditions for astronomy and astrophotography throughout the year.

_What To Wear_

Warm clothing is essential. Even in the summer, temperatures can drop significantly after sunset, so you should wear warm layers, a jacket, long pants, and closed footwear.

Reminders

  • Please arrive at the designated location 30 minute(s) before the scheduled departure time, as the tour will depart on time

  • The minimum age for the outdoor stargazing experience is 8 years old, and all children must be accompanied by an adult.

  • All guests must be fit and able to complete a 1.5km alpine walk in 25 minutes through the National Park to reach the boat jetty, and do the same on the return.

  • Tours are available year-round, with seasonal operational hours currently scheduled at 7:30 pm and 9:30 pm. Please note that minimum participant numbers may apply.

  • Because the tour is weather dependent, outdoor viewing is not always possible. If your tour is cancelled due to the weather (applicable from April 1), you will instead join a 45-minute indoor stargazing experience at the Planetarium and receive a 75% refund.

Cancellation Policy

  • Cancellations 4 day(s) (inclusive) before the selected date are allowed. Unused orders can be canceled for free
  • Cancellation is not allowed between 0–3 days from the selected date. Orders cannot be canceled or modified, and refunds will not be granted.
NOTE
  • Due to time zone differences, the confirmed cancellation date is based on the supplier’s local time. Please allow 2–5 business days to process your cancellation request, after which the cancellation fee will be charged according to the product’s cancellation policy. Once your refund request is confirmed, KKday will initiate the refund to your original payment method within 15 days. The actual refund timing depends on your card-issuing bank’s policy.
