This monumental city preserves an interesting historical heritage and its 11th-century turrets will offer you some magnificent views of the city itself, the Vega and the Sierra Nevada.
While walking through Guadix, you will time travel through different cultures and civilizations. Looking at the architecture, however, you will understand the important role religion has played in the development of the city: the Cathedral and the churches of Santa Ana, Santo Domingo and San Francisco will only be some examples.
The tour will also include a visit of the Megalithic Park, an archaeological deposit adapted for visitors, located in Gorafe's municipal area. Due to its numerous funerary monuments, it is one of the best examples of Megalithism in the southern Iberian peninsula. This unique geographical location contributes to its distinctive landscape and ecological features.

2. What types of megalithic structures can be found in Spain's Gorafe Megalithic Park?

Gorafe's Megalithic Park is renowned for hosting one of the highest concentrations of megalithic monuments in Europe, primarily dolmens. These are prehistoric tombs constructed from large stones, often consisting of upright stones supporting a flat capstone, forming a chamber. The park features a diverse array of these ancient burial structures, dating back to the Copper and Bronze Ages.

3. What defines a megalithic site like the Gorafe Megalithic Park?

A megalithic site, such as Gorafe's Megalithic Park, is characterized by the presence of structures built from large, unhewn or roughly hewn stones, typically dating from the prehistoric period (Neolithic to Bronze Age). These sites often served as burial grounds, ceremonial places, or astronomical observatories, providing valuable insights into the social, spiritual, and technological advancements of early human civilizations.

4. What is the historical context of the megalithic monuments in the Gorafe region?

The megalithic monuments in the Gorafe region date primarily from the Copper and Bronze Ages, roughly between 2500 and 1800 BCE. These structures highlight a sophisticated understanding of engineering and a rich spiritual life among prehistoric inhabitants, offering a tangible link to ancient societies in Andalusia.

5. What makes the landscape of the Gorafe region unique?

The Gorafe region's landscape is distinguished by its dramatic badlands formations, characterized by deep ravines, gullies, and arid plateaus. It offers a stark yet beautiful backdrop for the ancient megalithic sites found there.
