The Aomori Nebuta Festival typically runs from August 2nd to 7th each year. While the specific dates for each event can vary slightly, the main parades with the giant illuminated Nebuta floats usually occur from August 3rd to 6th, offering the most spectacular viewing experience. The final day often features a daytime parade and a fireworks display.
The Aomori Nebuta Festival is a designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, renowned for its giant illuminated Nebuta floats depicting brave warriors and mythical figures. These powerful, colorful floats are paraded through the streets at night, accompanied by lively music and dancers (haneto) who chant and leap, creating an incredibly energetic and visually stunning spectacle.
The Akita Kanto Festival is typically held annually from August 3rd to 6th. During these evenings, the main highlight is the night parade, where performers demonstrate incredible balance by hoisting long Kanto poles, adorned with numerous lanterns, high into the air. This creates a mesmerizing, dreamlike scene against the night sky.
The Akita Kanto Festival is unique for its breathtaking display of skill and balance. Performers masterfully hoist and maneuver incredibly long Kanto poles, adorned with up to 46 lanterns, using only their foreheads, shoulders, and hips. The sight of approximately 280 poles swaying gracefully against the night sky, resembling golden rice stalks, is a truly fantastic and deeply traditional cultural experience.
While it is possible to view both the Aomori Nebuta Festival and Akita Kanto Festival from general standing areas, having reserved seating significantly enhances the viewing experience, offering unobstructed views. Many tours, including those on KKday, provide reserved seats as part of the package, ensuring comfortable and convenient access to the parade action. Booking through KKday can offer the benefit of securing these prime viewing spots in advance.
Beyond the vibrant festivals, this tour takes you to other notable Tohoku destinations. You'll visit Kakunodate, often called 'Little Kyoto' for its well-preserved samurai district and beautiful architecture. Additionally, the tour includes Koiwai Farm, a vast, picturesque agricultural park where visitors can enjoy nature, interact with animals, and sample local produce.
The Aomori Nebuta Festival is characterized by its powerful, dynamic energy, with huge, illuminated floats and enthusiastic dancers. In contrast, the Akita Kanto Festival focuses on impressive displays of skill and balance, as performers carry and maneuver tall Kanto poles adorned with lanterns, creating a more elegant and ethereal spectacle against the night sky.
This high-quality tour provides a dedicated tour leader, praised for their hospitality, who accompanies guests throughout the journey. While the primary guidance is in Japanese, the tour is designed to be welcoming for international participants, including those from Taiwan and Hong Kong, ensuring first-time visitors can enjoy the experience comfortably and with peace of mind.
