With its bold brushstrokes and unconventional proportions, the figure appears round and plump, and even the animals and fruits seem bloated. These exaggerated yet endearing paintings are classic works by Colombian master artist Fernando Botero. He once said, "I don't paint fat, but rather a celebration of volume!" His unique artistic expression has made him one of the most distinctive and influential artists of our time.

This special exhibition, "The Rounded Magic of Botero," will showcase the diverse facets of Botero's work, encompassing oil paintings, drawings, watercolors, and three-dimensional sculptures, bringing together a total of 118 pieces. Visitors are invited to experience the boundless charm of rounded healing this summer.

[About Fernando Botero]

Fernando Botero was born in Medellín, Colombia in 1932. His early travels to Europe exposed him to the works of Spanish masters and the Italian Renaissance, laying the foundation for his artistic career. He advocated that "beauty in art originates from the celebration of volume," developing a unique style. His works present figures, animals, and still lifes in rich forms. Beneath their seemingly simple appearance lies a profound understanding of art history and a pursuit of perfection in line, color, and composition. Botero created over seventy years of art, producing countless classics, and insisted on completing each piece by hand. His works are housed in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, and his sculptures made him the first artist in the world invited to exhibit on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. He left a rich and magnificent artistic legacy for the world, continuing to inspire modern art.

【Latin America】Bottero's art is deeply rooted in his life experiences in Colombia. After being exposed to Mexican art in 1956, he further deepened his focus on Latin America, incorporating the distinctive street colors and rich cultural life of Furusato into his creations. Musicians, nuns, and people in power, as well as everyday life, all became sources of inspiration for him. With humorous and delicate brushstrokes, he created unique meanings through exaggerated proportions.

【Still Life Series】"The simplest forms are often the most difficult to depict." Botero's unique style originated from still life creation. The mandolin he created in his youth, by deliberately reducing the size of the sound holes, created the effect of the body of the instrument seemingly expanding outward. This made him rethink the relationship between the proportion and volume of objects, laying the foundation for the classic rounded aesthetics. Since then, his language of "volume" has gradually taken shape and runs through all his subjects.

【Bullfight & Circus】Bottero's brief experience of being sent to a bullfighting school during his youth, and the dramatic colors and tense atmosphere of the bullring, influenced him and prompted him to create a series of watercolor paintings on the theme of bullfighting. The traveling circus he encountered in Mexico also became one of his painting subjects. The trapeze artists and clowns in his paintings are full of dynamism, but their vivid presence implies the melancholy unique to ordinary people, adding an inner emotional depth to the entire series in addition to the joy.

【Paying Homage to Classics and Religious Themes (Versions & Religion)】 From a young age, Botero pursued excellence through dialogue with the works of masters. His early experiences in Europe enabled him to create a series of works that paid homage to art giants in his own unique style. Regardless of the original work, the final presentation can be instantly recognized as Botero's style—as he said, "Art is saying the same thing in different ways." For Botero, religion is not about doctrine, but about exploring form, color, and atmosphere, reinterpreting and challenging existing norms with humor and satire, which is particularly prominent in the female saint series.

【Mixed Media & Sculpture】In addition to oil painting, Botero also uses a variety of media such as pencil, watercolor, charcoal, and pastel. In his hands, his sketches are not only drafts, but also complete works, showing the precision of lines and the sensuality of form. Botero began exploring sculpture in 1973, making the beauty of volume three-dimensional. For him, art belongs to public space, and he hopes that his sculptural works will bring a more direct and concrete aesthetic experience, bringing art closer to people.
