Product Info

  • Ninna-ji Temple

Founded in 888, Ninna-ji Temple is the head temple of the Omuro school of the Shingon sect. The temple grounds preserve numerous historical buildings constructed during the Edo period, such as the Five-Story Pagoda and the Nio-mon Gate. The Omuro cherry trees, planted during the same era, reach their peak viewing period around mid-April each year, maintaining the same appearance they had in the past.
Furthermore, Ninna-ji Temple was designated as a World Cultural Heritage site in 1994. Upon entering through the Nio-mon Gate, which faces the road and is considered one of the Three Great Gates of Kyoto, you are greeted by the expansive and majestic temple grounds. The site features the National Treasure Kondo (Main Hall), as well as Important Cultural Properties such as the Five-Story Pagoda, Miei-do Hall, and Kannon-do Hall. Within the Goten (Palace) area, historical structures like the Ryokaku-tei and Hito-tei tea houses can be found. Due to its deep connection with the Imperial family and nobility, the overall architecture reflects the Ninna-ji Goten style, showcasing the elegant characteristics of imperial palace architecture.

  • Famous Site: Omuro Cherry Trees (Flowering Season: March-May)

Every spring, the grounds of Ninna-ji Temple are beautifully adorned with blooming cherry blossoms.
The Somei Yoshino cherry trees in front of the Kondo and the weeping cherry trees near the bell tower bloom in succession, with the Omuro cherry trees located on the west side inside the Chumon Gate being the most famous.
The Omuro cherry trees are known for their late blooming. They have been beloved by the common people since the Edo period and have been widely celebrated in waka poetry. The lively atmosphere of cherry blossom viewing at that time was recorded by the Edo-period Confucian scholar Kaibara Ekken in his book, Keijo Shoran, as follows:
'In spring, the depths of these grounds are filled with many yae-zakura (double-flowered cherry blossoms), which are the finest in and around Kyoto, rivaling the cherry blossoms of Mount Yoshino... There are so many people viewing the flowers that the crowds are like a tide every day...'
This shows that the spectacle was considered comparable to the cherry blossoms of Mount Yoshino. Additionally, the Omuro cherry trees were designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty in 1924. The Omuro cherry trees are characterized by their late blooming period and short stature. It was previously believed that this was due to a hard rock layer underground that prevented the roots from growing deep; however, recent surveys have revealed that the soil is actually clay. Nevertheless, because clay soil contains less oxygen and nutrients, it hinders root development, which is considered one of the major reasons for the trees' stunted growth.

  • What is the Ninna-ji Temple Autumn Leaves and Sea of Clouds Illumination?

The Ninna-ji Temple Autumn Leaves and Sea of Clouds Illumination is a special nighttime viewing event hosted by the head temple, Ninna-ji, combining autumn foliage, a sea of clouds, and lighting effects. Founded in 888, Ninna-ji is a thousand-year-old temple listed as part of the World Cultural Heritage site, Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto. The Kondo within the grounds is a National Treasure of Japan, relocated from the Shishinden of the Kyoto Imperial Palace. After dark, the temple takes on a completely different appearance under the lights. As the sky turns deep blue, the sky and the National Treasure Kondo seem to merge, creating a dreamlike autumn night scene in Kyoto. Whether you are visiting with family or spending a romantic evening as a couple, you can create unforgettable memories in this ancient temple.

  • What can you experience at the Ninna-ji Temple Autumn Leaves and Sea of Clouds Illumination?

Stepping into the Ninna-ji Temple Autumn Leaves and Sea of Clouds Illumination, the most breathtaking sight is the sea of clouds swirling at your feet. White mist flows slowly, interweaving with the autumn leaves illuminated by soft lights, making it feel as if you are strolling through a garden above the clouds. Looking up, you can see the illuminated National Treasure Kondo standing quietly. The sea of clouds, autumn leaves, and thousand-year-old architecture create a richly layered scene, making it the perfect time to photograph Kyoto's night view.
