Udo Island is a small volcanic island situated just off the eastern coast of Jeju Island, South Korea. It is part of Jeju Province and is known for its beautiful natural landscapes, including vibrant emerald-colored waters and distinctive volcanic formations. It is easily accessible via a short ferry ride from Seongsan Port on Jeju Island.
Visitors to Udo Island can enjoy a variety of activities. Popular options include renting bicycles or electric scooters to explore the island's scenic coastal roads, hiking along volcanic trails, and relaxing on beautiful beaches such as Seobinbaeksa Beach (Coral Beach). You can also visit Udo Lighthouse Park for panoramic views, explore the unique Black Sand Beach, and try local specialties like peanut ice cream and fresh seafood.
A full day is generally recommended to experience Udo Island comprehensively. This allows sufficient time to travel to and from the island, explore its key attractions, participate in activities like cycling or walking, and enjoy local cuisine without feeling rushed. Many visitors spend approximately 4 to 6 hours actively exploring the island itself after their arrival.
Exploring Udo Island thoroughly by bicycle or electric scooter typically takes about 2 to 3 hours to circumnavigate the island, not including stops at attractions. Walking the entire coastal path would require considerably more time, around 4 to 5 hours. A hop-on, hop-off bus tour, often integrated into day tours, provides an efficient way to visit major sights within a similar timeframe, allowing for stops at key points of interest.
For most visitors, there are no special entry requirements beyond those for entering South Korea and Jeju Island itself. A passport is typically not required for domestic travel from Jeju to Udo. Visitors usually purchase a ferry ticket directly at Seongsan Port to access the island. It is advisable to check current ferry schedules and any local regulations before your visit.
Generally, private cars, including most rental vehicles, are restricted from entering Udo Island. This policy aims to minimize traffic congestion and preserve the island's pristine environment. Exceptions are typically made only for local residents or under specific circumstances. Visitors usually park their vehicles at Seongsan Port on Jeju Island and then take the ferry, opting for scooters, bicycles, or the local island bus for transportation on Udo.
Visitors primarily travel to Udo Island by taking a ferry from Seongsan Port on Jeju Island. Ferries operate regularly throughout the day, with a crossing time of approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Tickets can be purchased directly at the port. Many organized tours, such as bus tours that include Udo Island, often arrange the ferry transfer as part of their comprehensive itinerary, simplifying the journey for travelers.
Udo Island is renowned for its stunning natural beauty. Key highlights include the vibrant emerald waters and pristine white sands of Seobinbaeksa Beach (also known as Coral Beach), the distinctive black sand and volcanic rock formations found at Black Sand Beach, and the dramatic cliffs and hidden caves along its coastline. Udo Lighthouse Park offers breathtaking panoramic views of the island and the surrounding sea, encompassing several of the acclaimed 'Udo eight scenic views'.
