Kimono upcycling transforms unwearable kimonos into new, useful items. In this Furoshiki making experience, you use fabric obtained by deconstructing and regenerating old kimonos. This process gives a new life to beautiful traditional textiles, turning them into a practical Furoshiki that you can use daily, preserving cultural heritage in a modern, sustainable way.
The workshop guides you through creating a 60cm x 60cm Furoshiki. You'll choose from a selection of regenerated kimono fabrics and threads, then use a sewing machine with instructor guidance to assemble your unique design. The experience focuses on hands-on creation, ensuring your Furoshiki reflects your personal style and craftsmanship.
The kimono upcycling experience takes place at Sairi Yashiki, a historic merchant's estate that thrived from the late Edo period to the early Showa era. Held within one of its traditional warehouses, the venue offers a 'time travel' atmosphere, allowing you to enjoy the creative process in a culturally significant and beautifully preserved environment.
Yes, the kimono upcycling Furoshiki workshop is designed for participants of various skill levels, including beginners. Instructors provide thorough guidance, making it a comfortable and enjoyable experience for those new to sewing. Children of elementary school age and above are also welcome, making it a great cultural activity for families.
The Furoshiki created during the kimono upcycling activity is designed to be a 'usable souvenir.' You can use it as a decorative item, a unique gift wrap, a stylish bag, or simply as a beautiful cloth for everyday use. It serves as a tangible and practical memory of your travel experience.
Yes, the entrance fee to the Kura no Sato Museum Sairi Yashiki is included in the kimono upcycling experience package. This means you will not incur any additional charges for admission to the historic venue, allowing you to fully enjoy both the workshop and the cultural surroundings.
Yes, the kimono upcycling workshop offers English language support. The instructors are able to provide guidance and instructions in both Japanese and English, ensuring that international visitors can comfortably participate and fully engage in the Furoshiki making experience without language barriers.
Each Furoshiki created in the workshop is unique because participants personally select their preferred regenerated kimono fabrics and threads. With hands-on guidance, you assemble these materials yourself using a sewing machine, ensuring that the final 60cm x 60cm Furoshiki is a truly original piece reflecting individual design choices and craftsmanship.
