Product Info

  • Savor Kutani ware and the refined merchant culture in a retro-modern townhouse. The old town area of Komatsu was formed around the Komatsu Castle that once stood here. In this area, where refined merchant culture—including Kabuki and Hikiyama floats—still remains vibrant, the only person currently engaged in Kutani ware production is the artist Mr. Yukio Uchida. He is also the owner of 'Toraya Pottery Shop,' which is housed in a renovated 'Komatsu Machiya' (traditional townhouse). In this program, under the guidance of Mr. Uchida, you will paint your own 'Ko-Kutani style' Kutani ware inside a retro-modern Komatsu townhouse. After the experience, enjoy matcha tea whisked by Mr. Uchida himself in the tea room, and immerse your senses in the atmosphere and the numerous furnishings preserved within. *For non-Japanese speakers: Guidance on the day will be provided in Japanese only.
  • Enjoy Kutani Painting in a Retro Townhouse
  • Based on the Ko-Kutani patterns that Mr. Yukio, who grew up in Toraya Pottery Shop, has long admired, you can try your hand at painting in the 'Ko-Kutani style.' The experience takes place on the second floor of Toraya Pottery Shop, one of the 'Komatsu Machiya' that preserves the charm of Komatsu's merchant culture. You can fully enjoy Kutani ware in an atmospheric space featuring a tatami room with vermilion walls, a Showa-modern style Western room, a splendid courtyard garden visible from below, and a tea room in the back.
  • Immerse Yourself in Merchant Culture. A Tea Experience with Kutani Ware
  • A characteristic of Komatsu's tea culture is that Lord Toshitsune Maeda, who retired to Komatsu Castle, encouraged tea ceremonies not only for the samurai class but also widely among merchants and townspeople. Toraya Pottery Shop has also held tea ceremonies during the 'Otabi Matsuri,' the largest festival in Komatsu City, which has continued for 250 years and takes place every May. In this program, Mr. Yukio will whisk the tea himself at the end of the painting session. In the relaxing atmosphere of the tea room, you can savor the authentic history and charm of Komatsu's merchant culture with all five senses.
  • Enjoy Masterpieces in a Hideaway-like Tatami Room
  • Climb the steep stairs typical of a townhouse, and you will find tatami rooms and tea rooms spreading out like a hideaway. Here, we display works by renowned Kutani masters that have been preserved precisely because 'Toraya Pottery Shop' has been involved in the wholesale and retail of Kutani ware. In the calm atmosphere of traditional architecture, you will be able to feel the cultural aspects that allowed Kutani ware to flourish from a different perspective than what you might see in museums or galleries.
