Finally unveiled! The world of exclusive figurine molds, long kept away from the public. Miyasou Seitosho has been dedicated to crafting only figurines for over 100 years, even among the kilns that create the base for Kutani ware. To continuously create figurines with complex shapes, the existence of molds is indispensable. Miyasou Seitosho possesses an archive of figurine molds that have been stored in their storehouse for 100 years, alongside the techniques for making figurines. In this program, we will unveil this world of molds for the first time. We will also demonstrate the actual molding process using these molds. *For non-Japanese speakers: The tour will be conducted in Japanese only.
A gallery lined with white figurines
The entrance to Miyasou Seitosho is a gallery displaying a wide array of works created at this kiln. What makes it slightly different from other Kutani-ware galleries is that almost all of them are white figurines. You can take your time to view these three-dimensional, dynamic figurines before they are painted with colors.
Observe the figurine molding process
During the studio tour, you will not only be guided by the 5th generation owner, Mr. Yoshihiro Miyamoto, but you will also be able to watch a demonstration of the molding technique using actual molds. Please come and experience the excitement of seeing a figurine emerge after clay or slip is packed into the mold and then removed.
Figurine molds revealed for the first time
The second floor of the studio has served as a storage space for plaster molds for figurines for over 100 years, ever since the predecessor of Miyasou Seitosho, Miyamoto Seitosho, was founded in 1914. We have never shown these to the general public for business reasons, but we are opening them to the public for the first time as a special event! There are many molds made by master craftsmen that can no longer be replicated today, making them well worth a visit.

Please note the following when participating in this course:

There are steep stairs to climb up and down to the second floor of the workshop. Those who are not confident in their legs may not be able to participate in the tour. There are steps inside the workshop, so please be careful where you step. If there are five or more participants, we will ask you to split into two groups to tour the workshop.

Other important points to note:

To commemorate your participation, you will receive a "beckoning cat" as a souvenir. Please choose either the cat with its "right paw, which attracts money," or its "left paw, which attracts people."
