Product Info

  • Enjoy matcha served in Kutani ware within the cultural atmosphere of a traditional townhouse tatami room Toraya Pottery has been a wholesaler and retailer of Kutani ware for generations. The current owner, Yukio Uchida, inherited the family business while also working as a Kutani ware artist, creating his own pieces through overglaze painting. In addition to viewing and purchasing Kutani ware in the 1st-floor shop, you can visit the open atelier on the 2nd floor of the townhouse, where you can observe Mr. Uchida at work. We also serve matcha in tea bowls created by Kutani artists. Come and experience the world of Kutani ware that flourished within this deep, cultural setting.
  • Immerse yourself in merchant culture. A tea experience served in Kutani ware
  • A characteristic of Komatsu's tea culture is the background of Lord Toshitsune Maeda, who retired to Komatsu Castle and encouraged tea ceremonies not only among samurai but also among merchants and townspeople. Toraya Pottery has held tea ceremonies every year during the 'Otabi Festival,' the largest festival in Komatsu City, which has continued for 250 years. In this program, Mr. Uchida himself will whisk tea for you at the end of the painting experience. In the relaxing atmosphere of the tea room, you can savor the authentic history and elegance of Komatsu's merchant culture with all five senses.
  • Enjoy masterpieces in a hideaway-like tatami room.
  • Climb the steep stairs typical of a Machiya, and you will find tatami rooms and tea rooms that feel like a hidden sanctuary. Here, we display works by renowned Kutani masters, preserved precisely because Toraya Pottery has been in the wholesale and retail business. In the calm atmosphere of traditional architecture, you can feel the cultural aspects of how Kutani ware prospered from a different perspective than what you would see in a museum or gallery.
  • Experience the charm of a traditional townhouse (Machiya)
  • Toraya Pottery is a renovation of a traditional 'Komatsu Machiya.' Beyond just Kutani ware, you can enjoy the unique vermilion walls of the Kaga-style tatami room, the Showa-modern Western-style room, folding screens decorated with calligraphy by Kutani artists of the time, and sliding doors (fusuma) featuring Mount Fuji that survived the Great Fire—all accompanied by Mr. Uchida's commentary.
