Phantom Island, or Maboroshi no Shima, is a pristine sand island near Ishigaki that temporarily emerges and disappears with the tides. Its uniqueness for snorkeling lies in its untouched natural beauty, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and vibrant coral reefs teeming with diverse marine life. It offers an unparalleled opportunity to explore an ephemeral underwater paradise.
Phantom Island is typically accessed by boat, as it's a transient sandbar located offshore from Ishigaki Island. As part of a guided tour, you would depart from a designated port or marina on Ishigaki, such as Ishigaki Port, with a professional guide navigating the waters to reach the island safely during its appearance.
In Kabira Bay, Stand-Up Paddling (SUP) and canoeing are popular activities that allow visitors to glide over its famously clear waters. These activities offer a unique perspective of the bay's stunning emerald hues and the lush surroundings, providing a peaceful way to explore its tranquil beauty without disturbing the protected coral reefs below.
Kabira Bay is highly significant and famous for its breathtaking natural beauty, recognized as a Michelin Green Guide Japan three-star site. It's renowned for its mesmerizing emerald-green waters, pristine white sands, and lush tropical vegetation. Historically, it's also known for its black pearl cultivation. While swimming is restricted to protect its ecosystem, glass-bottom boat tours offer views of its vibrant marine life.
Kabira Bay is located on the northwestern side of Ishigaki Island, Okinawa, Japan. It is situated approximately 30 minutes by car from Ishigaki City center. Its picturesque setting is easily accessible by rental car or as part of organized sightseeing tours around the island.
Due to strong currents and the need to protect its delicate coral ecosystem, swimming is generally prohibited in Kabira Bay itself. Visitors can still enjoy its beauty through activities like glass-bottom boat tours, SUP, or canoeing, which allow for observation of its marine life and stunning clear waters from above. Always adhere to local regulations and signage.
Guides provide comprehensive support throughout the Phantom Island snorkeling and Kabira Bay SUP/canoeing activities. This includes detailed safety briefings, instruction on how to use snorkeling gear or paddle a SUP/canoe, and assistance in the water, especially for non-swimmers. They ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, offering encouragement and pointing out interesting marine life or scenic spots.
During the Phantom Island and Kabira Bay experience, your guide will take complimentary tour photos using a waterproof camera. These photos capture your memorable moments, from snorkeling with marine life to paddling across Kabira Bay's clear waters. The images are typically shared with participants after the tour, allowing you to cherish your adventure without needing to worry about your own camera.
