The captivating "Niyodo Blue" hue results from the Niyodo River's exceptional water clarity and purity. Sunlight penetrates deep into the pristine water, scattering blue light more effectively. This natural phenomenon is amplified by the geological composition of the riverbed and surrounding landscape, creating the distinct, vivid blue that can be admired from a crystal kayak or SUP.
The "Niyodo Blue" is often most striking from late summer through autumn, typically from August to November. During this period, rainfall is usually lower, contributing to clearer water conditions. Sunny days enhance the blue's intensity, making it an ideal time for photography and enjoying water activities on the Niyodo River.
The Niyodo River's remarkable purity stems from its source in the mountainous regions of Shikoku, flowing through a sparsely populated area with minimal industrial activity. The geology of the watershed, primarily composed of ancient crystalline rock, naturally filters the water. This pristine environment ensures the high water quality and clarity perfect for crystal kayaking and SUP.
Participants are typically required to wear provided life jackets throughout the activity. It's important to listen carefully to the guide's instructions regarding paddling techniques, water conditions, and designated activity zones. Maintaining a safe distance from other participants and natural obstacles is also crucial for an enjoyable and secure experience on the Niyodo River.
Crystal kayaking involves sitting in a clear-bottomed kayak, offering a panoramic view of the riverbed and aquatic life below, providing stability. SUP (Stand-Up Paddleboarding) allows participants to stand or kneel on a board, offering a higher vantage point for viewing the Niyodo Blue and requiring more balance. Both offer unique ways to connect with the Niyodo River's beauty.
Swimming in the Nikobuchi area of the Niyodo River is generally not permitted due to safety concerns related to strong currents, deep pools, and the preservation of its pristine natural environment. Visitors can admire the stunning "Niyodo Blue" from designated viewing spots, but direct entry into the water for swimming is restricted to protect both people and the delicate ecosystem.
After enjoying crystal kayaking or SUP on the Niyodo River, many experiences include a relaxing lunch prepared with abundant local ingredients, often served with scenic views of the river. Additionally, some packages offer unique mementos such as drone footage of your experience, providing a memorable perspective of your adventure on the Niyodo Blue.
For crystal kayaking or SUP on the Niyodo River, it's recommended to wear clothes suitable for getting wet, such as quick-drying fabrics or swimwear. Bringing a change of clothes, a towel, sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses is also advisable. Footwear that can get wet, like water shoes or sandals with straps, is practical for comfort and safety.
