Kumano Sanzan (Kumano's Three Grand Shrines)
Kumano Sanzan includes Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, Kumano Nachi Taisha, and Seiganto-ji Temple. Historically, Hayatama purifies past sins, Nachi forges present ties, and Hongu offers future salvation. Pilgrims walked the Kumano Kodo seeking peace across all time.
[Kumano Hayatama Taisha]
Located by the Kumano River, this vermillion shrine enshrines the deities Kumano Hayatama no Okami and Kumano Fusumi no Okami. Highlights include a massive Nagi tree and the Kumano Treasure Hall with over 1,000 cultural artifacts.
[Kumano Hongu Taisha]
The first stop for ancient pilgrims from Kyoto, this cedar-shingled shrine exudes majestic warmth. The main deity is Ketsumiko no Okami. The original shrine was on an islet at the confluence of three rivers, now marked by Japan’s largest torii gate at Oyunohara.
[Kumano Nachi Taisha]
Starting at Daimonzaka and ascending 473 stone steps, visitors reach this shrine, which offers panoramic views reminiscent of Nachi pilgrimage mandalas. The shrine's main deity is Kumano Fusumi no Okami. Adjacent is Seiganto-ji Temple, and further north, Nachi Falls enhances the site’s majestic beauty.
Kumano Kodo (Ise Route)
The Kumano Kodo Ise Route is a sacred pilgrimage path from the revered Ise Jingu Shrine to the Kumano Sanzan, crossing rugged terrain. Known for the saying "Seven visits to Ise, three to Kumano," it retains rich scenic, historical, and cultural elements.
[Matsumoto Pass]
At 135 meters elevation, Matsumoto Pass is beginner-friendly and family-accessible. The mossy stone path and views of Shichirimihama Beach add to its charm.
[Onigajō Cliff]
Onigajo is a national natural monument with dramatic tuff cliffs and numerous caves, created by wave erosion and earthquakes, stretching about 1 km.
[Hana-no-Iwaya Shrine]
Hana-no-Iwaya Shrine enshrining Izanami no Mikoto features a towering 45-meter rock. It is a powerful and mystical site along the Hamakaido road.
Scenic Kumano Nachi Pilgrimage
[Daimonzaka]
Climb the beautifully preserved stone-paved path of Daimonzaka, leading approximately 640 meters to the sacred Nachi Mountain. The moss-covered stone steps and ancient 800-year-old cedar trees evoke the historic pilgrimage to Kumano.
[Kumano Nachi Taisha]
Originating from a natural worship of Nachi Falls, Kumano Nachi Taisha was relocated to its current site in 317 AD. The shrine's red structures stand out against the lush green mountain, creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere.
[Seiganto-ji Temple]
As the first site of the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage, Seiganto-ji Temple, alongside Kumano Nachi Taisha, is a major center of the Kumano faith. The temple’s three-story red pagoda, harmoniously set against Nachi Falls, is a popular photo spot.
