-What you can expect-
Come along on this carefully designed tour to see the northern lights with a professional photographer guide. Enjoy an intimate experience watching this colorful show around a campfire with a hearty traditional meal and great company.

Before the start of your tour, your expert guide will analyze the weather conditions in order to predict the best spots for the Northern Lights show, so you definitely don't have to worry about missing it! You'll make your way in a 17-seater minibus and make your way to see a spectacle of a lifetime. The guides will build a campfire and you can begin to capture the moment on camera as you socialize with the group or take a step away to enjoy the show on your own.

Don’t worry about being cold! There will be thermal suits and boots waiting for you in the van. Relax around the campfire whilst sipping hot drinks, warming up with a hearty meal and enjoying delicious cookies. Your guide will show you how to grill reindeer sausages (vegetarian option available) and prepare the traditional dish of 'Pølse i lompe' (Norwegian hotdogs!) Of course, there will also be something sweet for dessert!

Your guide will take pictures during the tour and will make sure that you have your perfect photo with the aurora for when you go home. If you decide to bring your own camera, there will be tripods available and your trained photographer guides will take the time to help you with the camera set-up. Pictures taken during the tour will be sent to you the next day.

After this amazing tour comes to an end, you will be dropped back at your city center hotel.

FAQ

1. What should I consider when choosing a reliable Northern Lights tour operator?

When selecting a Northern Lights tour operator, prioritize their experience and local expertise. Look for companies with knowledgeable guides who are adept at understanding weather patterns and identifying optimal viewing locations. Ensure they provide warm clothing or equipment, comfortable transportation, and uphold high safety standards. Reputable operators often offer clear policies on rebooking or refunds if the lights aren't visible, demonstrating a commitment to customer satisfaction and value.

2. What is the optimal season and time for viewing the Northern Lights on a tour?

The prime season for viewing the Northern Lights typically runs from late August to early April. During these months, the nights are sufficiently long and dark to observe the aurora borealis. Within this period, the most common viewing times are usually between 9 PM and 2 AM, though the lights can appear at any moment after dusk. Clear, cloudless skies away from city light pollution are essential for the best possible visibility.

3. What factors determine the price of a Northern Lights tour?

The cost of a Northern Lights tour is influenced by several key factors. These include the tour's duration, the group size (private tours are typically priced higher than group excursions), and the comprehensive inclusions provided. Such inclusions might encompass warm winter gear, hot beverages, a hearty meal, or professional photography services. The expertise of the guide, the type of transportation, and the tour's destination, especially if it involves specialized camps or remote locations, also significantly affect the overall pricing.

4. What is the probability of seeing the Northern Lights during a dedicated tour, and what happens if they don't appear?

While participating in a dedicated Northern Lights tour significantly enhances your chances of a sighting, visibility is never absolutely guaranteed as it relies on unpredictable natural phenomena like solar activity and clear weather conditions. Experienced tour operators utilize specialized forecasting and expert guides to maximize viewing opportunities. If the aurora does not appear, many operators offer a complimentary rebooking for another night or a partial refund, depending on their specific policy, to ensure perceived value even without a direct sighting.

5. What unique experiences or inclusions can I expect from a Northern Lights tour, such as a campfire or professional photography?

Many Northern Lights tours provide unique and memorable experiences beyond just observing the aurora. You can often expect to gather around a cozy campfire, which offers warmth and a magical ambiance under the night sky. Professional photographer guides are frequently included, assisting you in capturing stunning photos of the aurora and offering personal photography tips. Comfortable transportation to optimal viewing locations and hot beverages are also common provisions, enhancing your overall experience.

6. What kind of food or refreshments are typically provided during a Northern Lights tour experience?

To ensure your comfort during the Northern Lights viewing experience, many tours include refreshments. This typically features hot beverages like tea, coffee, or hot chocolate, which help to keep you warm in the cold night air. Some tours further enhance the experience by offering a hearty meal, such as a local soup, stew, or even a barbecue cooked over an open campfire, ensuring you stay nourished and comfortable throughout the evening's adventure.

7. What essential items should I bring or wear for a comfortable Northern Lights tour?

For a truly comfortable Northern Lights tour, dressing in multiple warm layers is paramount due to the cold temperatures often encountered. Essential items include thermal base layers, a fleece or wool mid-layer, and a waterproof and windproof outer jacket and trousers. Crucially, bring a warm hat that fully covers your ears, insulated gloves or mittens, and thick socks paired with waterproof, insulated boots. Hand warmers can also provide significant additional comfort.

8. How long does a typical Northern Lights viewing tour last, and what is the itinerary like?

A standard Northern Lights viewing tour typically spans approximately 4 to 7 hours, varying by operator and package. The itinerary often begins with a convenient pickup from a central meeting point, followed by a drive to carefully selected viewing locations away from city light pollution. While awaiting the aurora, common activities include setting up a campfire, enjoying provided refreshments, and listening to informative stories from your guide. The tour concludes with a return journey to the original pickup location.
