Sensoji Temple is Tokyo's oldest temple, founded in 645 AD. Its significance lies in its rich history, traditional architecture, and vibrant atmosphere. It houses the statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, and is a focal point for spiritual devotion and cultural heritage, attracting millions of visitors annually. The temple's Nakamise-dori market also offers a glimpse into traditional Edo-period commerce.
The Sensoji Temple grounds, including Nakamise-dori, are generally open 24 hours a day, allowing for peaceful evening strolls. However, the main temple hall (Kannon-do) and other dedicated structures typically open from early morning, around 6:00 AM or 6:30 AM, and close in the late afternoon, usually around 5:00 PM. It is advisable to check for specific seasonal adjustments.
There is generally no admission fee to enter the main grounds of Sensoji Temple or to visit the main hall for worship. Visitors can freely explore the temple complex, Nakamise-dori street, and the outer gardens. Some special exhibitions or specific smaller halls within the temple complex might have separate, modest entrance charges, but these are not the primary attractions.
Sensoji Temple is dedicated to Kannon Bodhisattva, the Goddess of Mercy (also known as Avalokiteshvara). According to legend, a statue of Kannon was caught in the Sumida River by two fishermen in 628 AD, leading to the temple's establishment. Kannon is highly revered for compassion and benevolence, and pilgrims visit Sensoji to pray for blessings, protection, and fulfillment of wishes.
For efficient travel between Sensoji Temple and Odaiba Diver City Tokyo Plaza, a combination of public transport is recommended. From Asakusa (near Sensoji), you can take the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line to Shimbashi, then transfer to the Yurikamome Line towards Toyosu, alighting at Daiba Station for Diver City. Alternatively, consider a scenic Sumida River cruise from Asakusa to Odaiba, followed by a short walk.
To reach the Imperial Palace, the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line to Nijubashimae Station or Marunouchi Line to Tokyo Station are common. For Sensoji Temple, the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line to Asakusa Station, or Toei Asakusa Line, are popular choices. Tokyo's extensive and efficient subway and JR train networks are the most convenient methods for navigating between these major landmarks.
Public transport is very convenient for exploring Odaiba, especially the Yurikamome Line. Diver City Tokyo Plaza is directly accessible from Daiba Station. This automated guideway transit line offers scenic views of Tokyo Bay, including Rainbow Bridge and the city skyline, making the journey part of the experience. The Rinkai Line also serves Odaiba for broader connections.
The Tokyo City Walk day tour includes a relaxing hot spring experience designed to soothe your body and mind. This allows participants to unwind after a day of exploring Tokyo's bustling streets and attractions. The hot spring visit offers a quiet and harmonious time, providing a traditional Japanese wellness activity as a perfect complement to the city walking adventure.
