FAQ

1. Why is Maya Bay so famous?

Maya Bay gained global recognition as the stunning backdrop for the movie "The Beach," starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Its pristine white sand, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and towering limestone cliffs create an iconic, picture-perfect tropical paradise that has captivated travelers worldwide, making it a highly sought-after destination.

2. Why are visitors restricted from swimming directly in Maya Bay?

To protect and allow the delicate natural ecosystem, especially the coral reefs and marine life, to recover from past overtourism, direct swimming in Maya Bay is currently prohibited. Visitors can admire the bay's breathtaking beauty from the boat and designated viewing areas on the beach, but entering the water from the shore is restricted to support ongoing conservation efforts.

3. What are the current entry regulations for visiting Maya Bay?

Maya Bay has strict entry regulations focused on environmental conservation. Visitors can access the bay by boat, disembarking at a floating pier at the back of the bay and walking a designated boardwalk to the beach. However, swimming is not permitted, and strict visitor limits and operating hours are enforced to minimize ecological impact and ensure the bay's long-term health.

4. Where exactly is Maya Bay located within the Phi Phi Islands?

Maya Bay is majestically located on Koh Phi Phi Leh, one of the smaller, uninhabited islands within Thailand's Phi Phi archipelago in the Andaman Sea. It is a stunning cove on the west coast of Phi Phi Leh, famously characterized by dramatic limestone cliffs that encircle three sides of the bay. It is typically accessed via boat tours from larger hubs like Phuket, Krabi, or Phi Phi Don.

5. What are the best ways to explore the various islands and lagoons around Phi Phi, such as Pileh Lagoon and Monkey Beach?

The most effective way to explore the stunning islands and lagoons around Phi Phi, including Pileh Lagoon and Monkey Beach, is by boat. Private longtail boat tours offer the flexibility of a personal captain who can navigate to prime snorkeling spots and scenic bays, ensuring a customized experience. Speedboats are also available for faster transfers and tours, covering more ground efficiently.

6. Can visitors access ride-hailing services like Grab for transport on Phi Phi Don Island?

Ride-hailing services such as Grab are generally not available on Phi Phi Don Island. The island's main village, Tonsai, is compact and easily navigated on foot. For longer distances or transfers to more secluded beaches and coves, visitors typically rely on longtail boats, which serve as the primary local transportation service along the island's coastline.

7. Are motorized vehicles like cars permitted for transportation on Phi Phi Don Island?

Phi Phi Don Island is largely car-free, contributing to its serene and relaxed atmosphere. There are no public roads for cars or large motorized vehicles, primarily due to the island's small size and narrow pathways. For moving around, walking is the most common method within the main village, while longtail boats are essential for inter-beach or inter-bay travel.

8. Is Phi Phi Don Island generally walkable for exploring its main village and beaches?

Yes, Phi Phi Don Island, particularly its main village of Tonsai and the surrounding accessible beaches, is very walkable. The village area is compact with paved pathways connecting various shops, restaurants, and guesthouses. Many popular beaches are also within comfortable walking distance. For exploring more distant parts of the island or reaching secluded coves, longtail boats are commonly utilized.
